Any series follows life upon "the vast Bering Sea" aboard five or higher crab fishing boats (the several featured vessels—Cornelia Marie, Sorcerer, Northwestern, and Time Bandit—and one or two "wild card" boats that happen to be shown for all or a part of a single season) during two with the dangerous crab fishing gardening seasons, the October king crab season plus the January opilio crab (a. t. a. C. opilio; also known as "snow crab" or "opies") time of year. The show emphasizes the particular danger to the crew relating to the decks of these ships (and the Discovery Station camera crews filming them) because crews ply their swap while ducking heavy crab pans swinging into position, maneuvering hundreds and thousands of pounds of crab across any deck strewn with stumbling hazards (holding tank hatches, jagged surfaces, maintenance access plates), and leaning above the rails to position cooking pots for either launch or simply retrieval as gale-force really winds and waves four to help you five times taller than a normal man constantly lash throughout the deck. The series also reports the dangers of even being on a boat in the Bering Seashore crab grounds, in the midst of a number of the coldest and stormiest waters we know, where even the the majority of minor problem becomes complicated and requires considerable ingenuity to end when the nearest port of any sort is often hundreds of miles away.
